Visit Sandhaven Beach
Sandhaven Beach is the main beach in South Shields, with its long stretches of golden sand and impressive sand dunes. You’ll find it bustling with families, sunbathers, and people enjoying the fresh sea air on a sunny day.
The beach runs from the pier to Trow Point. The northern end is usually busier and has lots of family entertainment including the Ocean Beach Pleasure Park and the Dunes Adventure Island.
There is deck chair hire available from the hire centre under the walkway on the beach.
There’s always something happening at the beach. You can join in on sandcastle competitions, play volleyball, or even try your hand at surfing or paddleboarding. The South Shields Surf School is right there, ready to help you get started if you’re a newbie.
The beach is also a hub for events, especially in the summer. You might catch live music or family-friendly activities.
Take a walk along the pier to the lighthouse, looking out to the North Sea and keep your eye out for dolphins. They sometimes make an appearance.
Heading the other way, down to the south side of the beach, it becomes more natural with grassy dunes and a rugged cliffs of Trow Point.
There is loads of parking on the seafront all along the promenade.
There is a seasonal dog ban on the northern half of Sandhaven Beach from May 1st to September 30th. During this period, dogs are not allowed on that section of the beach, during the summer months. However, the southern part of the beach is generally more dog-friendly.
