Pwll Du Bay

Visit Pwll Du Bay

Pwll Du Bay is a beautiful and hidden beach located on the southern coast of the Gower Peninsula in Wales. If you’re feeling up for an adventure and want to explore a unique beach, then Pwll Du Bay may be the perfect destination for you.

This south-facing pebble beach is a hidden gem, but be warned that it’s not the easiest to access. You’ll need to take a footpath to get there and once you arrive, you won’t find any amenities nearby.

You can choose from a few lovely walking routes to reach it. If you start from Pyle Corner in Bishopston, you can enjoy a 1.5-mile walk down a narrow lane. Alternatively, if you come from Kittle, you’ll find a scenic 2-3 mile walk through the beautiful Bishopston Valley. For those coming from Southgate, it’s about a 2-mile stroll along the cliffs toward High Pennard.

When you finally arrive at Pwll Du Bay, you’ll be greeted by a really stunning beach with smooth limestone pebbles and a sandy area that appears when the tide is low. A lovely stream creates a pool behind the beach, and this is where the name “Pwll Du,” which means “Black Pool” in Welsh, comes from. The bay is surrounded by impressive limestone cliffs, adding to its natural beauty.

Even though it’s a bit remote, there’s still plenty to do at Pwll Du Bay. Swimming is popular, and the waters are generally safe, but you should be cautious near Pwll Du Point due to strong currents.

If you enjoy kayaking, the calm waters make it a fantastic spot for that as well.

Just keep in mind that there are no facilities at the beach, so it’s a good idea to bring everything you need with you. The nearest shop is about a mile away at Pyle Corner.

However, if you’re looking for a peaceful and secluded spot to enjoy the natural beauty of the Gower coastline, Pwll Du Bay is definitely worth checking out.

Plus, if you have a furry friend, you’ll be happy to know that dogs are welcome on the beach all year round.
