Visit Hawthorn Beach
Hawthorn Beach on the Durham coast is a small quiet beach backed by woodland. This beautiful section of the Durham Heritage Coastline is off the beaten track and fairly quiet all year round.
Walk through the woods, onto the stoney beach. Look down and you might find some sea glass here too. There are no facilities at this beach, but it is still a lovely place to take long walks, make patterns with the stones on the beach and enjoy the stunning scenery.
Great for long coastal walks and exploring the Hawthorn Dene Nature Reserve behind.
This beach is dog friendly all year round.

Hawthorn Beach Dogs Policy
Dogs are welcome all year at Hawthorn Beach, with no formal restrictions.
During spring and early summer, dogs should stay on leads near nesting birds to avoid ruffling feathers. Outside those areas, it’s a peaceful, sniff-rich walk.
Binoculars optional, dog treats essential.
