West Mersea Beach

Visit West Mersea Beach

West Mersea Beach, a charming seaside gem on Mersea Island on the Essex coast. The beach itself is a mix of sand and shingle, perfect for sunbathing, picnicking, or simply enjoying the views of the Blackwater Estuary.

For a classic seaside experience, rent one of the colourful beach huts that line the beach, all along Victoria Esplanade. They’re perfect for enjoying the day, storing your belongings, changing, or simply relaxing in the shade with a good book.

While West Mersea Beach doesn’t have lifeguards on duty, it’s generally a safe place to swim and enjoy water activities.

Love to be active? West Mersea Beach is great for water sports. Whether you’re keen to try stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, windsurfing, or even the exciting new sport of wing foiling, there’s something for everyone. The Mersea Island Watersports centre offers high-quality rentals and lessons, so don’t worry if you’re a beginner.

If you prefer a more relaxed approach to seaside fun, why not try your hand at crabbing? There’s nothing quite like the excitement of catching your first cra. For those who enjoy fishing, you can cast a line from the shore or join a boat trip for a chance to catch something bigger.

If you head west you will get to the West Mersea Yacht Club (along Coast road if you are driving). A yachting hotspot, with busy boatyards and an annual regatta each August.

Dogs are allowed on West Mersea Beach all year round, with the recommendation to keep them on a lead during busy summer months.
