Fishstock Brixham Shortlisted

Fishstock Brixham has been selected for the shortlist of the category “Tourism Event of the Year” for the South Devon Tourism & Hospitality Awards 2012.

This is an honour and a welcome boost as the team speeds into the final month of planning for the 2012 event on Saturday September 8th.

Funds raised at Fishstock Brixham are crucial to the work of the Fishermen’s Mission, whose Superintendent in Brixham, John Anderson, delivers support, counselling and welfare to distressed fishermen, widows and orphans. Since 2009 we have donated £23,000 to the Fishermen’s Mission.

Team leader of Fishstock Brixham, Jim Portus said “I am thrilled that our little quayside event has grown in popularity since the first Fishstock in 2009. The Brixham town-folk have embraced this celebration of fishing and maritime heritage. The Brixham Chefs Seafood Piazza sold-out last year so this time we have made ample provision for hungry lovers of great local fish. We have an amazing line-up of local and celebrated chefs performing their craft on the Castles Kitchens Theatre stages. There are two Sound Events stages, one for local rock musicians headlined this year by Dartmouth-based Sax Appeal, the other for acoustic folk bands including Brixham legends Maggie Duffy & Mike Weed, Swashbuckle & Southern Comfort.

Jim Portus added “We are very pleased to have secured a number of generous sponsorship packages and grants this year. I’d like especially to thank Astra Zeneca, Brixham Town Council, Brixham Tourism Partnership, Coombe Fisheries, Kitsons Solicitors, Maritime International Solutions and the Marsh Christian Trust Heritage Crafts Association Award. Without such great support, including from the Brixham harbourmaster, Paul Labistour and his team, we would not be able to put on such a great show at only £5 entry, accompanied under 15s free!

Commenting for sponsors Kitsons Solicitors, James Cross, Managing Partner said: “Kitsons Solicitors is proud to be sponsoring Fishstock Brixham for the second year. Fishing is a vital part of our south west heritage and local economy and we are delighted to support an event bringing together food and drink producers, theatre and the local community. It promises to be an entertaining day out that will raise much needed funds for the Fishermen’s Mission in Brixham”. http://www.kitsons-solicitors.co.uk

Commenting for Coombe Fisheries Ltd Company Director Iain Spear said, “Much of our King Scallop and Cuttlefish is landed in Brixham by local fishermen and we are pleased to demonstrate our support for their community and importantly for the Fishermen’s Mission by sponsoring Fishstock Brixham 2012, the wonderful celebration of fishing and maritime heritage. (Coombe Fisheries Ltd, founded in 1980 and based in the South West of England, has grown into a substantial company with turnover in excess of £15M.) http://www.coombefish.co.uk
