Warren Beach

Visit Warren Beach – Folkstone

The Warren Beach, tucked beneath the tall cliffs east of Folkestone, is one of the town’s most peaceful and scenic coastal spots. Far less crowded than Folkestone’s central beaches, The Warren feels wonderfully wild and remote, with a mix of sand, shingle and rockpools, all framed by towering chalk cliffs and green hillsides.

The beach stretches for quite a distance and is backed by The Warren Country Park, a nature reserve known for its rare plants, fossils and wildlife. The area is criss-crossed with walking trails, making it popular with ramblers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts. The scenery is rugged and beautiful, with plenty of quiet space to explore or simply sit and enjoy the sound of the waves.

Access to the beach is via steep paths or steps that lead down from the cliff-top trails, so it may not be suitable for everyone, especially those with limited mobility. But if you’re up for the walk, it’s worth the effort. One of the most popular access points is via Warren Road, where there’s some parking and a footpath that takes you down through the trees and onto the beach.

The beach itself is great for rockpooling, fossil hunting (especially after a storm), and picnics. At low tide, it opens up to reveal flat sandy stretches, perfect for paddling or letting kids explore safely – though always check tide times, as the sea can come in quickly here.

There are no lifeguards, and swimming should be approached with caution, especially since the beach is quite remote. The water is clean and often calm on a clear day, but the currents can be unpredictable.

Facilities are minimal – there are no toilets, cafés, or shops directly on the beach, so come prepared with whatever you need. The nearest amenities are back in Folkestone town centre, which is around a 20-30 minute walk or a short drive away.

The Warren is also a fantastic place for walking. The clifftop paths offer sweeping views across the Channel, and on a clear day, you can often see France. Wildlife lovers may spot kestrels, butterflies, and even seals along the coast.

The Warren Beach is perfect for anyone looking to get away from the crowds and enjoy nature at its best. Whether you’re a walker, a fossil-hunter, a dog owner, or just someone who appreciates a bit of coastal peace, this stretch of shoreline is a hidden gem.

Dogs are welcome all year round, which makes The Warren a favourite with local dog walkers. There are no seasonal restrictions, and with so much open space, it’s ideal for a long, off-lead run. Just keep an eye on dogs near the cliffs and any areas with grazing wildlife.
