Visit Sandwich Bay
Sandwich Bay Beach is one of Kent’s more secluded and unspoilt coastal gems. Between Ramsgate and Deal, it’s a long, peaceful stretch of shingle and sand. Backed by salt marshes and coastal sand dunes and private estates, it has a quiet feel that appeals to walkers, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a break from the busier seaside resorts.
The area known as the ‘Sandwich Flats’ run for about five miles along the coast. The beach itself is mostly shingle at high tide, with patches of sand revealed when the tide goes out. It’s not your typical deckchair-and-ice-cream kind of beach – there are no amusements or arcades – but that’s exactly its appeal. Instead, it offers a tranquil setting for long walks, birdwatching, fishing, and simply soaking up the coastal atmosphere.
The beach is on a private estate, so there is a small toll fee to drive through. Access to the beach is through the toll road, costs a small fee for vehicles (from £10). Alternatively, you can walk or cycle in for free via coastal paths, including the Saxon Shore Way. The area is also popular with cyclists and wildlife spotters, especially as the beach backs onto nature reserves and protected marshlands.
The Sandwich Bay Sailing & Water Ski Club, located right on the shore. This private club has a long history in the area and offers members access to sailing, water skiing, paddleboarding, and windsurfing opportunities.
The beach is good for fishing, particularly in the quieter months, and some visitors enjoy paddleboarding and kayaking, though conditions can vary depending on the tide and wind. It’s less suitable for swimming due to the steep shingle banks and occasional strong currents.
There are no lifeguards on duty and no beachside facilities directly on the beach, so visitors should come prepared with their own food, water, and any other supplies. The nearby Royal St George’s Golf Club and residential areas mean the beach tends to stay fairly quiet and uncrowded, even in summer.
There are no prominent tourist landmarks on the beach itself, but the location is steeped in history. The nearby town of Sandwich is one of England’s best-preserved medieval towns, and just inland you’ll find Richborough Roman Fort, offering a fascinating look at the area’s past.
Sandwich Bay Beach is a peaceful, nature-rich spot best suited to walkers, dog owners, and anyone looking for a quiet escape along the Kent coast. It may not have the buzz of Margate or Broadstairs, but its untouched beauty and sense of calm make it a rewarding place to visit.
As for dog access – dogs are welcome all year round, which makes Sandwich Bay a favourite among locals who want a long, open space for walks. Just be mindful of local wildlife in the dune areas and nature reserves nearby.
