Visit East Cliff Sands
East Cliff Sands is one of Ramsgate’s more peaceful stretches of beach, tucked just around the corner from the livelier Main sands. With its golden sand, wide open space and steep chalk cliffs standing watch above, it’s the kind of spot that feels just far enough away to breathe, while still being close to everything you might need.
This beach sits on the eastern side of the Ramsgate Harbour wall. Although it’s not as well-known as the main sands, locals often prefer it for its quieter atmosphere and lovely views out over the Channel.
When the tide is out, there’s plenty of room to spread out. Go for a paddle, or simply lie back and enjoy the sea breeze. The cliffs provide some shelter too, making it a great place for sunbathing without the gusty wind you sometimes get along the coast.
There’s something very “classic seaside” about East Cliff Sands – but without the noise. It’s still close to the cafés, fish and chip shops and public loos around Ramsgate town centre, but the beach itself feels unspoilt and a bit tucked away. A little stroll along the upper promenade gives you stunning views of the sea and leads directly into the town’s beautiful Georgian terraces and historic harbour area.
There’s no lifeguard cover on East Cliff Sands, so if you’re planning a swim, do take care – especially with younger children or when the tide is changing. That said, it’s generally a safe beach, and the gently sloping sand makes it good for paddling when the weather’s right.
Access to the beach is fairly easy, with steps and sloped paths leading down from the clifftop.
This beach is also a lovely place to start a walk – either west toward Ramsgate Harbour and Main Sands, or eastward along the clifftop paths toward Dumpton Gap and Broadstairs. The coastal views are especially gorgeous in the early morning or at golden hour.
East Cliff Sands is the kind of beach that doesn’t try too hard – it’s calm, clean, and just a little bit hidden from the crowds. Whether you’re after a quiet morning swim, a sandy spot to read a book, or a coastal stroll with the dog (out of season), it’s well worth a visit.
As for dogs, they’re welcome on East Cliff Sands during the off-season, which usually runs from 1st October to 30th April. During the summer months (May to September), there are restrictions in place. You’ll need to head further along the coast to Dumpton Gap or Pegwell Bay for a dog-friendly summer beach walk. Always look out for local signs just in case the council updates any seasonal rules.
