Dymchurch Beach

Dymchurch Beach Sea Wall

Visit Dymchurch Beach

Sandy Dymchurch Beach on the Kent coast is a popular wide open beach which is perfect for a traditional family day out. With its huge expanse of golden sand, long promenade, and a good dose of that old-school seaside charm, it’s easy to see why it’s such a popular spot, especially during the summer holidays.

The sea wall extends the length of the beach and slopes down to the sand. It is a family friendly location, with plenty of things to do both on the beach and in the village.

When the tide goes out at Dymchurch, the beach opens up wide – and we mean really wide. There’s so much room for beach games, paddling, building sandcastles or just stretching out with a towel and a book. The sand is soft and clean, making it great for families with kids or anyone who simply loves a proper sandy beach.

The village of Dymchurch sits just behind the seawall, with cafés, amusements, pubs and small shops all within easy reach of the beach. You’ll find fish and chips, ice cream, and plenty of places to grab a snack or a cup of tea. It’s a spot that has kept its slightly vintage feel, and it’s all the better for it.

There’s a large promenade running along the back of the beach, which is ideal for walking, scooting or just enjoying the sea views. The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway also stops in the village – a lovely little steam railway that’s been delighting visitors since the 1920s. It’s definitely worth a ride, especially if you’ve got children in tow or just fancy doing something a bit different.

In terms of swimming, the beach is shallow and gently sloping, so it’s generally safe for a splash, though you should always check the tide times and stay aware of the sea conditions. In 2024 Dymchurch beach received a Seaside Award from Keep Britain Tidy however in 2025 there have been concerns over water quality which a ‘no swim’ warning.

On a sunny summer days you can relax, swim in the sea or take up kite-surfing and occasionally you will see horse riders on a beach ride during the winter.

There’s plenty of parking nearby, with a decent-sized pay-and-display car park close to the beach and more spaces dotted around the village. Public toilets are available too, and everything’s generally accessible, with ramps and level areas along the promenade.

Dymchurch is also a great base if you want to explore more of the Romney Marsh area – a unique landscape of flat fields, big skies and quiet lanes. You can easily pair your beach visit with a countryside walk or a visit to one of the historic churches and villages nearby.

All in all, Dymchurch Beach is a relaxed, coastal spot – perfect for families, day-trippers, and anyone who fancies a traditional seaside experience with space to spread out and a splash of nostalgia in the air.

Dogs are allowed on Dymchurch Beach, but with some restrictions. From 1st May to 30th September, dogs are not permitted on the main beach area near the centre of the village between 10am and 6pm.

Outside of those times, and in the quieter stretches to either side of the main beach, from Sycamore Gardens in the north, to the Martello car park to the south – you’re usually fine to walk your dog. Always check the local signs to be sure.
