Visit Piel Island
Piel Island, located in Morecambe Bay off the southern tip of the Furness Peninsula in Cumbria, is a small yet historically rich destination.
Piel Island is reached by the causeway from Rampside, with amazing views of Morecambe Bay.
The island is accessible via a passenger ferry that departs from Roa Island, operating daily from April to September, typically from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (weather permitting). The round-trip fare is £6 for adults and £4 for children, with under-4s traveling for free.
At low tide, visitors can walk to Piel Island from Walney Island, but this should only be done with a local guide due to the shifting sands and tides.
The island is home to the ruins of Piel Castle, a 14th-century motte and bailey fort built by the monks of Furness Abbey. This historical site offers insights into the island’s past and is managed by English Heritage, allowing free access once on the island
A traditional pub dating back to the 17th century, The Ship Inn serves local ales and food. It is notable for its unique tradition where the landlord is crowned the “King of Piel” during a quirky ceremony involving a wooden chair, sword, and helmet.
