St Marys Bay

Visit St Marys Bay

St Mary’s Bay is one of Brixham’s quietest and most atmospheric beaches, tucked beneath striking red sandstone cliffs just east of the town. Despite being close to the harbour, it feels remote and untouched, rewarding visitors willing to tackle the steep access path with genuine peace and seclusion.

It’s a sand and shingle beach, perfect for a sunny day the relaxing by the sea.

Swimming is possible in calm conditions, though the shelving shingle means the water deepens quickly. It’s best suited to confident swimmers and those looking for a quiet dip rather than extended paddling.

The beach is formed of shingle and backed by dramatic Devonian rock layers, part of the English Riviera Geopark. These rocks date back hundreds of millions of years and are rich in geological interest. Fossil fragments can sometimes be found among the stones, making the bay particularly appealing to curious beachcombers and amateur geologists.

There are no facilities, and access can be difficult getting to the bottom of the cliffs. Bring everything you need, including water and suitable footwear for the descent.

Visitors walking the coastal path can take in the views above the beach at Sharkham Point.

The bay’s isolation creates ideal conditions for wildlife watching. Peregrine falcons are regularly seen hunting along the cliffs, while seabirds nest on the ledges above. Early mornings are especially rewarding, with little human activity and excellent light for photography.

St Mary’s Bay also links directly to the South West Coast Path, making it a natural stopping point for walkers exploring the coastline between Brixham and Berry Head. From the beach, the views back toward the headland are particularly striking, with layers of red rock contrasting against the deep blue of the sea.
