Visit Oddicombe Beach
Oddicombe Beach is one of Torquay’s most distinctive beaches, famous for its red sand and dramatic access via a historic cliff railway. Sheltered by pine-covered cliffs, it combines convenience with a strong sense of place, making it a standout destination on the English Riviera.
The beach lies at the base of steep red sandstone cliffs, creating a warm, enclosed feel even on breezy days. The sand is fine and soft, ideal for sunbathing and relaxed beach time. Calm water conditions make swimming popular, particularly in summer when the bay warms quickly.
Oddicombe Beach is well-equipped with amenities, including clean toilets, a café, beach hut rentals, and a beach shop. Visitors can also enjoy activities such as pedalos, kayaks, and trampolines.
The cliff railway, first opened in 1926, remains one of the steepest passenger railways in the UK and adds a memorable element to any visit. Alternatively, visitors can walk down via a zig-zag path, with viewpoints offering sweeping views across South Devon’s coastline.
From the clifftop, paths link to Babbacombe Downs, offering some of the best panoramic views on the English Riviera. Oddicombe works equally well as a family beach or a scenic stop on a wider South Devon coastal itinerary.
