Anstey’s Cove

Visit Anstey’s Cove

Anstey’s Cove is visually striking beach on the English Riviera, known for its crystal-clear water and dramatic limestone formations. Sheltered by wooded hills, this compact shingle beach feels enclosed and intimate, despite being only minutes from central Torquay.

This small secluded cove is just along from Babbacombe, backed by cliffs with a steep path leading down to the shingle and rock beach.

The cove is part of the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark, and the twisted, folded rock layers visible along the cliffs are among the best geological examples in South Devon. These formations also help create exceptionally clear water, making Anstey’s Cove a popular spot for snorkelling and diving.

Swimming conditions are excellent in settled weather, with the cove’s shape offering protection from strong winds and swell. Kayaking and SUP paddleboarding are also popular here, particularly in the early morning when the water is calm and glassy.

Did you Know? Anstey’s Cove is known for being a sport climbing (style of rockclimbing) hot spot.

One unusual feature of Anstey’s Cove is its acoustics. The steep rock faces can amplify the sound of waves, creating a dramatic backdrop during rougher seas. Above the beach, woodland paths connect to the South West Coast Path, offering elevated views across Tor Bay and toward the wider English Riviera coastline.

Facilities are limited but well managed, helping to maintain the cove’s natural feel. It’s a beach best suited to those who enjoy scenery, clear water, and a slightly more adventurous edge to their beach days.
