Visit Westbrook Bay
Award winning Westbrook Bay just along from Margate in Kent, is a sandy beach with colourful beach huts lining the promenade and safe shallow bathing conditions.
Perfect for those looking for a quieter alternative to the busier town beaches nearby. With its wide open stretch of golden sand, clean water and traditional seaside feel, it’s a lovely spot for families, dog walkers, and anyone wanting a laid-back day by the sea.
At low tide, the beach becomes especially large, with plenty of space for sandcastle building, beach games, or just sitting back to enjoy the sea air. You’ll also find rockpools at either end of the bay, making it a good beach for kids to explore nature up close.
In summer, the beach is patrolled by lifeguards, and the water is usually calm, making it safe for paddling and swimming. It’s a Blue Flag beach, which means the water quality is excellent, and the beach is well looked after.
Facilities at Westbrook Bay are available. You’ll find toilets, seasonal beach huts, and a small café close to the promenade offering drinks, snacks and ice cream. There’s a children’s play area on the green nearby and the seafront promenade links easily to Margate and St Mildred’s Bay, making for a pleasant walk or cycle.
This beach makes the ideal place for a day out with young children to enjoy building sandcastles and exploring the rock pools when the tide is out. For more family fun the Strokes adventure golf 18 hole minigolf course on the eastern side of the beach over looks the bay.
Although there are no loud amusements here, Westbrook Bay has a peaceful charm. It’s ideal for a relaxed day out, and thanks to its size, you’ll often find plenty of space even on sunny weekends.
Did you Know? The former Seabathing Hospital overlooks the bay as it was thought that fresh air and salt water was essential for promoting good health.
Whether you’re bringing a picnic, going for a swim, or just watching the waves roll in, Westbrook Bay is a great example of Kent’s quieter, underrated coastal spots.
There are seasonal dog restrictions in place. From 1 May to 30 September, dogs must be kept on a lead between 10am and 6pm. Outside of those times and during the rest of the year, it’s a popular spot for dog walking, especially along the promenade and sandier stretches.
