Visit Sunny Sands Beach
Sunny Sands Beach is Folkestone’s most popular traditional seaside beach – a compact but charming stretch of golden sand right next to the historic Harbour Arm. It is a firm favourite with families throughout the summer, with good facilities nearby including WCs and cafés, pubs and beach shops.
This hugely popular sandy beach sits at the eastern end of the Stade and Folkestone Harbour. As the name suggests, Sunny Sands enjoys a sunny, south-facing position and is sheltered from the wind by the surrounding cliffs and harbour walls – perfect for soaking up a bit of warmth even when there’s a coastal breeze elsewhere.
In the summer season, lifeguards patrol the beach, offering extra peace of mind for those swimming or letting little ones explore. There are also public toilets and beachside cafés just a short stroll away, and the nearby Folkestone Harbour Arm has been revitalised in recent years with independent food stalls, art spaces, live music, and even pop-up cinemas, making it a great place to explore after some time on the sand.
If you’re after a classic beach day with a bucket and spade or just want to dip your toes in the sea before grabbing lunch at the Harbour Arm, Sunny Sands is a cheerful, family-friendly spot that’s full of seaside character.
Dogs are not allowed on the beach from 1 May to 30 September, which is worth keeping in mind if you’re visiting in the warmer months. Outside of this period, dogs are welcome and it becomes a lovely off-season spot for walks.
