Littlestone Beach

Visit Littlestone Beach

Littlestone Beach is a peaceful and spacious stretch of coastline on the edge of the town of New Romney, sitting just west of Greatstone beach and Dungeness. Known for its old-world charm and open skies, this beach offers a calm, understated seaside experience – perfect for those who prefer a quieter setting without the crowds and noise of more commercial resorts.

The beach has charming multi-coloured beach huts sitting along the seafront, and is popular with families in the Summer for a day by the seaside.

Immediately behind the huts are two grassy play areas with swings and small adventure playground perfect if you are out with young children. There is also parking and a convenience store across the road.

The beach itself is made up of shingle and pebbles at high tide, with sandy areas and tidal flats emerging when the tide goes out. It’s particularly well known for its long, flat expanse, which makes it ideal for walking, kite flying, and beachcombing. On clear days, the views across the English Channel are wide and uninterrupted – great for photography or just a moment of stillness.

While there are no lifeguards on duty and facilities are limited, the beach is still a popular choice for locals and those in the know. It’s also a good spot for sea fishing, with anglers often seen casting out from the shingle bank.

Looking out to sea at low tide you can see the remains of a Mulberry Harbour from WW2 – a hidden piece of coastal history that adds intrigue to a walk along the shoreline. Heading North on Coast Road towards St Mary’s Bay is the famous Littlestone Golf Club.

You won’t find amusement arcades or loud attractions here, but Littlestone Sailing Club offers opportunities for water-based activities, including dinghy sailing and windsurfing, particularly in the summer months when the conditions are favourable. The beach is also used occasionally by paddleboarders and kayakers, especially when the sea is calm.

This part of the coast is also closely linked to the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, a famous miniature steam railway that runs right through the area and adds a nostalgic touch to any visit. Littlestone itself began life as a Victorian resort, and although its heyday has passed, it still retains a peaceful, timeless atmosphere.

Whether you’re after a gentle stroll, a paddle at low tide, a bit of fishing, or simply some peace and quiet by the sea, Littlestone Beach is a lovely place to unwind and reconnect with nature – far from the hustle and bustle, but rich in character.

Parking is fairly straightforward, with on-road parking available along Marine Parade and side streets. There are some public toilets and a handful of small cafés and shops within walking distance, mostly in nearby New Romney.

Dogs are welcome all year round, (only but restricted from Water tower at Madeira Road to Clark Road) making Littlestone a great option for dog walkers. With miles of open space and no seasonal restrictions, it’s a favourite for locals with four-legged companions.
