Beresford Gap

Visit Beresford Gap

Beresford Gap in Birchington-on-Sea is a small seafront along the Kent coastline between Epple Bay and Grenham Bay. If you’re looking for somewhere away from the usual seaside hustle and bustle, this little clifftop gap leading down to the shore might just be the perfect escape.

Unlike the bigger, sandier bays nearby, Beresford Gap is more rugged and natural. It’s a narrow break in the chalk cliffs with a slipway and steps that take you down to a quiet stretch of pebbles and rockpools. At low tide, some sand appears and the rocks become exposed, making it a lovely place for beachcombing, exploring, or just sitting with a picnic and watching the waves roll in.

The area has a calm, local feel. You won’t find arcades, cafés or ice cream stalls here – and that’s part of the charm. It’s popular with walkers, especially those following the Viking Coastal Trail, which passes right along the clifftop. It’s a lovely part of the route, with open skies, sea views, and grassy paths winding above the shore.

Parking is limited but free – there’s a small pull-in area near the top of the gap, or you can park along nearby residential streets and walk in. Access to the beach is via concrete steps or the slipway, but bear in mind the slope can be steep and uneven in places, especially after bad weather.

There are no facilities right at the gap – no toilets, lifeguards, or cafés – so it’s best to bring what you need and plan ahead. The nearest toilets and refreshments are over at Minnis Bay, which is only a short walk west along the clifftop path.

Beresford Gap is also a good spot for a bit of reflection or quiet time. It’s not often busy, even in summer, so you can sit on the bench at the top of the cliff and enjoy the sea breeze without interruption. The views are wide and peaceful, and on clear days you can see right out across the Thames Estuary.

While it may not offer the traditional beach day out with sandcastles and chips, Beresford Gap is a lovely place to pause – whether you’re on a walk, looking for a quiet read with a sea view, or just want to get away from it all for a little while.

This beach is a popular spot for water sports, there is a ramp for speed boats and water skiing. While not part of the Water User Group, this location is designated for members of the Beresford Water Ski Club. Here, you can enjoy speed boating, jet skiing, and water skiing under the guidance of experienced club members.

Dog walkers often favour Beresford Gap, although it’s important to note that dogs are not allowed on the beach itself from 1st May to 30th September between 10am and 6pm. Outside of those times, it’s a good stretch for a peaceful stroll with your four-legged friend. The promenade above remains dog-friendly year-round.
