Winchelsea Beach

Visit Winchelsea Beach

Winchelsea Beach is a quiet, unspoilt shingle beach, just to the west of Camber Sands, on the East Sussex coast.

Starting from the eastern end, you can enjoy views towards the expansive Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, which is known for its rich birdlife and natural beauty. This area has a flat expanse of sand and mud that becomes visible at low tide, making it ideal for walking and exploring.

As you move westward, the beach here is backed by a holiday park and you will come to the Winchelsea Beach Cafe. There is a menu of hot and cold food and outdoor seating.

Winchelsea Beach is a great destination for kayaking, jet-skiing, sailing, and windsurfing. The beach’s natural setting and relatively calm waters make it an appealing spot for watersports, although there are no lifeguard services available.

People do swim at Winchelsea Beach, and it is considered safe to do so, particularly at high tide.

The sea wall extends the length of the beach towards the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve which backs the eastern side of the beach.

There are great views here. From the top of the sea wall, visitors can enjoy stunning views towards Camber Sands and the Dungeness headland to the southeast, while the red cliffs at Fairlight can be seen to the west on clear days.

Winchelsea beach is popular with dog walkers throughout the year. From May 1 to September 30, dogs are not allowed on certain parts of the beach. However, there are specific areas where dogs can be exercised on leads during this time.
