Visit Aberfraww Beach (Traeth Mawr)
South facing Aberffraw beach, or Traeth Mawr in Welsh, is a wide sandy beach in Anglesey, North Wales. It is near the village of Aberffraw, at the mouth of the Afon Ffraw (Ffraw River)
Parking is nearby, and it is a pleasant walk along the estuary to the beach. You’ll want to walk along the Afon Ffraw (that’s the Ffraw River). Just follow the path that runs alongside the river. It’s a lovely stroll, and you’ll get to enjoy the beautiful scenery, with the sand dunes on your left.
As you continue walking, the path will lead you right to the beach. You’ll know you’re getting close when you start to see the expansive sandy area of Traeth Mawr (Aberffraw Beach) opening up in front of you. It’s a fantastic spot to relax, explore, or take a dip in the sea!
Just a little tip: be careful near the river mouth and the rocks, as the currents can be strong.
Surfing is popular here too, so bring your board. Aberffraw Beach itself is known for being a good spot for surfing, especially when conditions are right. While there aren’t dedicated surf schools here, the beach is popular among local surfers.
The beach is backed by the Aberffraw Dunes, which are among the most extensive mobile dune habitats in the UK. This area has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is part of the Abermenai to Aberffraw Dunes Special Area of Conservation (SAC). The dunes support a variety of plant species, and are home to diverse invertebrates and bird species.
The area is also known for fishing, particularly from the rocky outcrops nearby, where anglers can catch a variety of fish, including mackerel and sea bass.
Aberffraw Beach is dog-friendly all year round and is a fantastic destination for a fun day out with your dog!
