Visit Point Clear
Point Clear is a sandy stretch of beach in the coastal village of St Osyths on the Essex coast. The beach is backed by holiday parks all along the Point Clear Spit.
The nearby area has several walking trails, including the Point Clear Circular trail, which offers scenic views and a moderately challenging route for walkers. At around 6.8 miles, this trail is ideal for a relaxed half-day outing.
The route blends grassy seawall paths with quiet roads and short inland stretches, passing holiday parks, old oyster pits and the pebbly shoreline of Point Clear Bay. Wildlife is a constant companion here, with wading birds in the marshes and the occasional seal spotted in the estuary.
Point Clear has a rich history, first appearing on maps in 1880. The area was fortified during the Napoleonic Wars, resulting in the construction of Martello Towers, which served as defence structures. One of these towers has been repurposed as the East Essex Aviation Museum, showcasing the region’s aviation history.
You can also take the foot ferry boat over the creek to Brightlingsea (3 mins) or to East Mersea (9 mins) from the landing stations on the northern tip of the spit.
