Portmellon Beach

Visit Portmellon Beach

Portmellon Beach is a small sandy cove on Cornwall’s south west coast, just over a mile from Mevagissey. It sits at the end of a narrow valley and offers a quieter alternative to some of the area’s busier beaches.

At low tide, a broad stretch of sand appears between the rocky headlands. Children can explore the shoreline, build sandcastles and search for small rock pools. As the tide rises, the beach becomes much smaller, giving the cove a completely different feel.

The sheltered position makes Portmellon popular for swimming, paddleboarding and kayaking when conditions are calm. The water is usually gentler than many beaches on Cornwall’s north coast, making it a good choice for families and anyone looking for a more relaxed beach day.

Unlike larger resort beaches, Portmellon has retained a simple and traditional character. Fishing boats are often moored in the bay, cottages line the waterfront and the sea sits just a few metres from the road at high tide. The result is a beach that feels connected to the local community rather than built around tourism.

The beach also makes an excellent stop while exploring the South West Coast Path. Walkers can enjoy spectacular views towards Mevagissey, Chapel Point and Gorran Haven. Early morning and evening are particularly rewarding when the cove is quieter and the light softens across the water.

For visitors looking to escape the crowds and experience a more peaceful side of Cornwall, Portmellon Beach is well worth adding to the itinerary.
