Visit Carlyon Bay
Along the stunning coastline of St Austell Bay, Carlyon Bay offers visitors not one, but three unique beach experiences. This nearly 2-mile stretch of coastline is a perfect blend of natural beauty and modern amenities.
Carlyon Bay consists of three distinct beaches:
- Crinnis Beach: The main attraction and the largest of the three, Crinnis is often simply called Carlyon Bay Beach. It’s the heart of the action, where you’ll find most of the facilities and activities.
- Shorthorn Beach: A quieter section, perfect for those seeking a more relaxed atmosphere.
- Polgaver Beach: The third jewel in Carlyon Bay’s crown.
For families, the bay offers plenty of space for kids to play, build sandcastles, and explore. The clearer waters make it an excellent spot for introducing little ones to the joys of swimming in the sea.
While it’s not your typical soft, sandy shore, the fine pebble and coarse sand composition gives it a distinctive character. As you step onto the beach, you’ll notice the sand. It’s actually “stent” – a coarse mixture of grey quartz and occasional tourmaline grains, a fascinating remnant of Cornwall’s tin and china clay industries.
The beach buzzes with a lively atmosphere, through the summertime. With music playing and a bar open from noon until late.
For those seeking adventure, Carlyon Bay doesn’t disappoint. A water sports rental offers exciting options like jet skiing. “Wave Runner Safaris” comes highly recommended for an exhilarating ride on the waves. The clear waters also make it a great spot for a refreshing wild swim.
The South West Coast Path runs along the cliff top and along the golf course, which surrounds the bay.
At the far eastern end of the bay was Cornwall’s first official nudist beach! The Polgaver Naturist Bay was officially opened by the comedian Freddie Starr in 1971, however Polgaver is no longer a naturist beach.
If you’re visiting outside peak season, you’ll find a more tranquil atmosphere, ideal for peaceful walks along the shoreline or simply enjoying the coastal views.
Families will find plenty to keep the kids entertained. An interesting rock formation with rock pools at its base provides a natural playground where children can discover small crabs and other marine life.
Dog restrictions apply from Easter Sunday to September 30th, so plan accordingly if you’re bringing your furry friend
For a lively beach day full of activities, a quiet spot for relaxation, or a bit of both, Carlyon Bay’s trio of beaches has something for everyone.
