Visit Meadfoot Beach
Meadfoot Beach sits just east of Torquay Harbour and offers a more refined, relaxed alternative to the town’s busier central beaches. With a long promenade, clear water, and views of sailing yachts, it’s one of the most popular spots on the English Riviera for open-water swimming.
The beach is predominantly shingle, which helps keep the water exceptionally clear. Swimming clubs regularly use the area, and calm mornings often see wetsuited swimmers entering the sea at sunrise. The promenade is ideal for gentle walks, with benches overlooking the bay and views across Tor Bay.
There are also beach huts for hire along the promenade.
Meadfoot also has strong literary connections. Agatha Christie, who grew up nearby, is known to have swum here, and the surrounding area still carries an old-world elegance that fits well with Torquay’s historic identity within South Devon.
Facilities are well spaced but unobtrusive, maintaining a calm, grown-up atmosphere. Meadfoot works particularly well outside peak summer months, when the light is soft and the water remains inviting.
Dog friendly on the north of the beach, restricted from the south between the signs displayed.
