Visit Porthgwarra Beach
Porthgwarra Beach is a picturesque and secluded cove, with a traditional fishing heritage in West Cornwall. Once a thriving fishing port, Porthgwarra still shows traces of its working past. A hand-dug tunnel, originally carved through the rock by miners, offers an unusual entrance to the beach.
There is an atmospheric tunnel in the rock, leading to the slipway to the cove, where swimming is safe.
Porthgwarra gained popularity as one of the key filming locations for the BBC drama Poldark. Fans will remember it as the site where Ross Poldark went for a swim – a scene that put this quiet beach on the map.
Swimming is possible in calm conditions, especially within the shelter of the cove. However, there are no lifeguards on duty and the water beyond the headland can have strong currents – so take care and don’t venture too far out.
At low tide, Porthgwarra reveals a network of rockpools along its edges, ideal for spotting crabs, anemones and other small sea creatures. It’s a fantastic activity for curious children (and adults!).
Just a stone’s throw from the sand, the small Porthgwarra Cove Café is a gem. It serves hot drinks, Cornish pasties, and cream teas – ideal after a walk along the cliffs or a dip in the sea.
This stretch of coast is a favourite with birdwatchers and nature lovers. Keep an eye out for choughs, seals basking on rocks, and the occasional dolphin pod offshore, particularly in the spring and autumn months.
Did you Know? Just over a mile away lies the world-famous Minack Theatre, an open-air venue perched on a clifftop. It’s well worth combining your beach day with a performance or a visit to the theatre’s gardens and viewpoint.
Charming holiday cottages are available, and it is a lovely spot for couples looking for a quiet romantic weekend away.
Dogs are not allowed on the beach between 10am and 6pm from 1st July to 31st August. Outside of these times, it’s a lovely spot for dog walkers, with scenic trails nearby.
