Visit Lavernock Point Beach
Lavernock Point, known in Welsh as Trwyn Larnog, is a significant headland located in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. It is where the Severn estuary becomes the Bristol Channel and looks out towards Flat Holm Island.
If you like interesting geological formations, you will love it here.
Lavernock Point features coastal cliffs composed of sedimentary rocks from the late Triassic and early Jurassic periods. The area includes formations such as the Blue Lias and Lavernock Shales, which are rich in fossils, including those of oysters and other marine life. Notably, in 2015, a dinosaur fossil named Dracoraptor hanigan was discovered here, marking a significant paleontological find.
Lavernock Point is historically important as the site of the first successful wireless message transmitted over open sea by Guglielmo Marconi in 1897, connecting Lavernock Point to Flat Holm Island. A plaque commemorating this achievement is located nearby and you can stop in at the Marconi Inn – the local pub.
There are no facilities such as restrooms, cafes, or shops, so visitors should come prepared.
Close to the car park is the charming St Lawrence Church, which is well worth a visit.
