Visit Old Portsmouth Beach
Old Portsmouth Beach (Hotwalls beach) is located within the town, at the mouth of Portsmouth Harbour in Hampshire. It’s close to the old town and runs from the Round Tower to the pier.
Today an art gallery, the 15th century Round Tower looks out over the harbour. There are shops, cafes and Hotwalls studios artisan market on Broad street right behind the beach.
This pebble beach is backed by the historic Portsmouth City wall. Take a walk along the wall to Victoria Pier, which is a popular fishing spot.
The Portsmouth Millennium Promenade Walk is a popular walking route for both tourists and locals, which passes by this beach. It is a scenic route (just under 2 miles) along the promenade linking Portsmouth’s waterfront, starting from Spur Redoubt near Clarence Pier in Southsea and finishing at The Hard.
While swimming is not recommended due to strong currents, the beach is ideal for fishing and leisurely walks along the scenic coastline.
The designated bathing areas in Portsmouth are located east of South Parade Pier, where safer swimming conditions are provided.
The beach stunning views of Portsmouth Harbour and is close to various attractions, including historic pubs and the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, home to notable ships like HMS Victory.

Old Portsmouth Beach Dogs Policy
Dogs are banned from 1 May to 30 September at Hotwalls and between Southsea Castle and the Royal Marines statue.
Outside these zones, dogs are welcome year-round. Leads near paths, off-lead on open shingle.
Great for history lovers and dogs who enjoy cobbles and cannons.
